Nearby are the sites of a fort ordered built in 1679, and of the oldest tomb found in the county,
that of Rose Peters - 1690. Iron mining was begun here as early as 1734. Remains of a colonial
furnace, foundry, and mill have been discovered. Confederate regiments were camped in the
vicinity to support gun batteries set up in the winter of 1861-62 to interdict union navigation of
the Potomac River.
